Grand National Prediction & Betting Odds

When making your Grand National prediction it’s easy to go for the favourite. Just look at the latest Grand National odds and take your pick. But is it a guaranteed winner? Not necessarily, considering the unpredictable nature of the National.

Since 2000 we’ve seen five favourites finish first at Aintree. Hedgehunter in 2005, Comply or Die in 2008, Don’t Push It in 2010, and Tiger Roll in 2019 and 2020. In fact, Tiger Roll’s historic back-to-back wins are the only times we’ve seen the favourite triumph in the last 10 years. With an overall win percentage for the favourite of around 13%, if you want our Grand National betting tips, it’s not always about backing the supposed top horse.

Considering the distance and unpredictability of the Grand National, anything is possible. Which makes betting each way always a good option.

What happened last time?

History was made at Aintree in the 174th Grand National. 2022’s edition of the world’s most famous horse race saw Noble Yeats, ridden by Sam Whaley-Cohen, become the first 7 year-old jockey to win the Grand National since 1940.

Snow Leopardess went into the race as one of the bookies’ favourites and was hoping to become the first grey to win the Grand National since 2012. Rachel Blackmore, the 2021 Grand National winner, left the running fairly early. Coko Beach was out in front after the first circuit, Longhouse Poet and Freewheelin Dylan joined at the head of the field. As the pace quickened, all three finished 6th, 7th and 8th.

Any Second Now, the runner-up, was faintly ahead over the last fence, but Noble Years came ahead by the time they reached The Elbow.

In 2021, history was also made off the racetrack, with the race taking place behind closed doors for the very first time due to the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic at the time. But, it was still held at its traditional spring scheduling.

What are the biggest events in Horse Racing?

Whilst the Grand National might be the most famous race in the world and the one many people choose to bet on, it’s not the only big event on the calendar. Yes, we may refer to April’s race at Aintree as The Grand National, but that’s not to forget the Scottish Grand National held the week before in Ayr and the Welsh Grand National held two days after Christmas in Chepstow

Just before the English Grand National betting begins, March sees the Cheltenham Festival – one of the top 10 attended sporting events in the UK. The main event of the festival, the Cheltenham Gold Cup has become arguably the most sought-after prize for national hunt jockeys and trainers, even more so than the Grand National.

Throughout the horse racing calendar, you’ll enjoy plenty of other opportunities to bet on top races with BoyleSports. Including Royal Ascot, the Derby at Epsom, the King George Weekend and Goodwood Festival. Not to mention the many major single meetings held at racecourses across the country, from Chester Races to York Races and Doncaster Races.
